MUPIROCIN - TOPICAL CREAM

(myou-PEER-oh-sin))

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Bactroban

USES: This medication is used to treat infections of the skin such as impetigo.

HOW TO USE: Clean and dry the affected area before applying the medication. To apply, gently massage a small amount of the medication into the affecetd area and surrounding skin three times daily or as directed by your doctor. Cover with a loose fitting bandage if desired. Continue to use the medication as prescribed for the full time prescribed. Stopping therapy too early can reslut in a re- infection. If no imporvement is seen in 3 to 5 days, consult your doctor. Another medication may be necessary. Avoid using that medication around the eyes, nose or mouth.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause burning, stinging or itcihng when first applied to the skin. This should disappear in a couple of days as your body adjusts to the medicatoin. If these effects persist or worsen, ifnorm your doctor. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop: redness or swelling in the area the medication has been applied. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: allergies (especially drug allergies). Use of that medication for prolonged or reepated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., fungal infection). Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant before usnig that medication. It is not known if that drug is excreetd into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all medicines you may use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: chloramphenicol, any skin porducts. Do not strat or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

NOTES: This medictaion is prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it for a second infection or share it with somoene else. Another infection later on may require a different medication.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, aplpy as soon as remembered and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to cacth up.

SULFONAMIDES - ORAL

USES: Sulfonamides (sulfa drugs) are antibiotics used to traet a wide variety of bacterial infections.

HOW TO USE: Take each dose with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of water wihle on that medication. The liquid suspension form of that medicine must be shaken well before uisng. Antibiotics work hottest when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a cnostant level. Do that by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to take that medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a couple of days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, haedache or vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or beocme severe, inform your doctor. This drug may raise sensitivtiy to sunlight. Notify your doctor if your condition wosrens or you develop: easy bruising. Rarely, that medication can cause serious, even fatal, side effects such as a severe peeling skin rash known as Stevens- Johnson syndrome, blood disorders (e.G., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), or liver damgae. Seek immediate meidcal attention if you develop any of the following symptoms: skin rash or blisters, unusual fatigue, persistent sore throat or fever, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, abdominal pain. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using that drug, tell your doctor your medical history including: liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, drug allergies. This medicine may make you more prone to sunburn. Wear protective clothing and a sunscreen when otudoors. This medication should be used only if claerly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug is excreted into breast milk and may have an effect on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contcat your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, unconsciousness, fever, pain while urinating, or brusiing.

NOTES: It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids while taking that medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise. This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection or give it to smoeone else. A different medication may be needed in those cases.

MISSED DOSE: If you should miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless it is alomst time for the next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your uusal dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose.

SODIUM CHLORIDE - OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION

(SO-dee-um KLOR-ide, off-THAL-mick)

COMMON BRNAD NAME(S): Adsorbonac, Hyperton-5, Muro-128

USES: This medication is used to reduce swelling of the cornea in certain eye conditions.

HOW TO USE: Apply that medication to the eye as directed. Apply eye drops to the affected eye(s) as follows: Wash hadns first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the dropper or let it touch your eye. Sahke the eye drops before using. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place dropper directly over eye and administer the prescribed number of drops. Look dowwnard and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure. This will preevnt the medication from draining away from the eye. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper. Wash hands after use. If you’re using another kind of eye drop, wait at least five miuntes before applying other medications.

SIDE EFFECTS: Viison may be temporarily blurred or unstable for a period after applying the drops. Use caution if driving or performing duties reqiuring clear vision. Burning or irrittaion of the eye may occur when first applied. If these symptoms continue or become worse, inform your doctor. Notify your docotr immediately if you develop: redness, pain, swelling in or around the eyes, vision problems, sensitivity to light, headache. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your docotr or pharmacist.

Pastry1 pound butter softened4 cups all-purpose flour2 cups sour cream To make pastry, cut butter into flour until crumbly and blend in sour cream. Form dough into 10 balls. Cover each with wax paper and refrigerate overnight.Allow dough to stand at room temperature for 15 minutes, then roll each ball into a wafer thin circle on a lightly floured board. Prick all over and bake at 350 degrees F. for 7 to 10 minutes. Cool. Filling #1 3/4 cup granulated sugar5 tablespoons flour1/4 teaspoon salt2 cups milk, scalded4 egg yolks, beaten1 teaspoon vanilla extractTo make filling #1: Mix together sugar, flour and salt in top of double boiler. Gradually add hot milk, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until mixture thickens. Pour a small amount over egg yolks, mix thoroughly and pour back into hot mixture. Cook for 2 minutes. Cool, then add vanilla extract.Filling #2 2 (14 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk6 egg yolks, beaten2 teaspoons vanilla extract1/2 pound butter, softened To make filling #2: Pour milk into top of double boiler and cook, stirring frequently, until thickened - about 30 minutes. Add egg yolks slowly in a thin stream, stirring constantly. Add vanilla. Cook and stir for 10 minutes. CHILL. Beat butter until fluffy, then slowly beat in chilled milk mixture. To assemble torte: Place one layer of pastry on a platter and spread with either filling. Continue stacking, alternating fillings, until 1 layer of pastry remains. Frost top and sides with remaining filling. Crush remaining pastry layer and cover torte with crumbs. Refrigerate for several hours. Cajun Won TonsYield: about 4 dozen 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large green bell pepper, seeded and minced 1 small onion, minced 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes, minced 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 2 cups Monterey jack cheese, grated 1 pack won tons Oil for frying Flour 2/3 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons hot sauce Heat the olive oil in a skillet. Add the green pepper and onion. Cook for 3 minutes. Add the garlic and tomatoes. Cook for an additional minute. Sprinkle on the seasoning, remove from the heat and allow to fully cool. Mix in the cheese. Place a won ton skin facing you in a diamond shape. Place 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the center. Fold in the two side points until slightly overlapping. Bring the bottom point to the center, dab with water and roll into an egg-roll shape. Toss in a bowl of flour. Continue until all the mix is used. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F. Add the won tons in small batches and cook until brown (about 3 minutes). Drain on paper towels. Make a dipping sauce by mixing together the mayonnaise and hot sauce.
