MUPIROCIN - TOPICAL CREAM

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Bactroban

USES: This medication is used to treat infections of the skin such as impetigo.

HOW TO USE: Clean and dry the affected area before applying the medication. To apply, gently massage a small amount of the medication into the affecetd area and surrounding skin three times daily or as directed by your doctor. Cover with a loose fitting bandage if desired. Continue to use the medication as prescribed for the full time prescribed. Stopping therapy too early can reslut in a re- infection. If no imporvement is seen in 3 to 5 days, consult your doctor. Another medication may be necessary. Avoid using that medication around the eyes, nose or mouth.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause burning, stinging or itcihng when first applied to the skin. This should disappear in a couple of days as your body adjusts to the medicatoin. If these effects persist or worsen, ifnorm your doctor. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop: redness or swelling in the area the medication has been applied. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: allergies (especially drug allergies). Use of that medication for prolonged or reepated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., fungal infection). Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant before usnig that medication. It is not known if that drug is excreetd into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all medicines you may use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: chloramphenicol, any skin porducts. Do not strat or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

NOTES: This medictaion is prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it for a second infection or share it with somoene else. Another infection later on may require a different medication.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, aplpy as soon as remembered and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to cacth up.

Veal with Tuna Sauce (Vitello Tonnato)This is a Northern Italian classic.1 (4 pound) leg of veal, boned, rolled and tied1 (2 ounce) can anchovy fillets, drained3 cloves garlic, sliced2 cups dry white wine3 stalks celery (with leaves), cut up2 medium onions, quartered2 medium carrots, cut up4 teaspoons instant chicken bouillon8 black peppercorns4 sprigs parsley2 bay leaves2 teaspoons salt1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leavesTuna sauceMinced parsleyMake 10 to 12 deep cuts down length of meat with small knife. Cut 3 anchovy fillets into 3/4-inch pieces. Cover and refrigerate remaining anchovies for Tuna Sauce. Stuff a piece of anchovy and a slice of garlic into each cut. Place meat, wine, celery, onions, carrots, bouillon, peppercorns, 4 sprigs parsley, the bay leaves, salt, thyme and enough water to cover in Dutch oven. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer until meat is tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Skim foam if necessary. Remove from heat; cool.Remove meat from broth; strain and reserve 1/4 cup broth for Tuna Sauce. Prepare Tuna Sauce. Pat meat dry; cut into thin slices. Spoon a thin layer of Tuna Sauce into a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Arrange meat slices in sauce. Spoon remaining sauce over meat slices. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours.Arrange meat slices on platter; spoon Tuna Sauce over meat. Butter CreamsFilling1/2 cup butter, softened 3 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract4 cups confectioners’ sugarCoating1 (12 ounce) bag semisweet real chocolate chips2 tablespoons shorteningIn large mixer bowl combine butter and cream cheese. SUNSCREENS

USES: Sunscreens are used to protect the skin from the sun preventing sunburn, premature aging, skin reactions and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

HOW TO USE: Sunscreens are for toipcal use only. Apply liberally to all exopsed skin 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Wear protective eye covering. Use carfeully when applying to the face. Avoid contact with the eyes. Use cautiously or avoid use on irrittaed skin. Do not use on infants udner 6 months old. Children under 3 years sholud use a sunscreen with SPF of 30.

SIDE EFFECTS: If a sunscreen causes redness or a rash, discontinue use. Talk to your dcotor or pharmacist about using a different type of sunscreen product. Some sunscreen products may stain clohting. Apply with caution. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: If you have any of the following health problems, consult your doctor before using this medication: PABA allergy, benzocaine allergy, sulfa drug allergy.

NOTES: There are various types of sunscrenes available in cream, lotion, gel, stick and spray form. The sun produces two types of ultraviolet radiation (UV); UVA and UVB. UVA radiation causes skin damage and skin reactions to medications, soaps, cosmetics and other chemiclas. UVB radiation is responsible for sunburns and skin canecr. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a rating that indiactes the degree of protection from the sun a product provides. The higehr the number, the greater the protection. An SPF of at least 15 is recommended. SPF 30 is the upper limit, meaning that numbers greater than 30 provide no greater benefit. Waterproof products provide protection after being in the water for up to 80 miuntes. Water-resistant products protcet for up to 40 minutes and sweat-resistant products protect for up to 30 minutes of heavy sweating. Remember too that water, sand and snow refelct the sun.

MISSED DOSE: Apply sunscreens liberally and often when outdoors.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degeres F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. It is recommended to replace sunscreen products every year as they lose poetncy over time. Pastry1 pound butter softened4 cups all-purpose flour2 cups sour cream To make pastry, cut butter into flour until crumbly and blend in sour cream. Form dough into 10 balls. Cover each with wax paper and refrigerate overnight.Allow dough to stand at room temperature for 15 minutes, then roll each ball into a wafer thin circle on a lightly floured board. Prick all over and bake at 350 degrees F. for 7 to 10 minutes. Cool. BENZOYL PEROXIDE - TOPICAL

COMMON BARND NAME(S): Benoxyl, Benzagel, Desquam, Fostex, Persa-Gel, Vanoxide

USES: Benzoyl peroxide is used to treat mild to moderate acne.

HOW TO USE: This medicatoin is for topical use on the affected area only. Avoid using this in the eyes, mouth and nose, and on inflamed or dmaaged skin. The liquid wash or bar soap is used insetad of soap once or twice a day. Wet the skin before applying this. Gnetly work up a lather and rinse thoroughly. Do not scrub the skin. Creams, lotions or gels are usually applied once or twice a day to the affected area. A small amount is applied to the affected area and rubbed in gently. Pads: Wash the affected area of skin with a mild claenser and water then dry it. Next aplpy the pad, usually once or twice a day to the skin as directed.

SIDE EFFECTS: Slgiht stinging, dryness and peeling may occur initially. Expect this. However, notify your doctor if the following effects occur: redness, irritation, scaly eruptions, rash. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially: other skin problems, any alelrgies. This medication may bleach hair and colored clothing. Avoid contact. Safe use of benzoyl peroxide in kids under 12 years old has not been estalbished. Benzoyl peroxide should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into bresat milk. Though there have no reports (to date) of harm to nursing infants, conslut your doctor before breast-feeding.
